FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS"How to choose a DJ for your party or event."
By Eric D. Schlosser
Choosing a disc jockey for your party or event is an important decision. This brochure was written to help
make this process easier. We hope that your event is a huge success, and that you are 100% satisfied with your choice of DJ services. We will answer the most commonly asked questions. This will give
you the information you need to make an informed decision when choosing the DJ service that is "right" for you and your guests. Q: How much do you charge? A: The going rate for DJ services is $100 - $250 per hour. Keep in mind that you usually get what you pay for, and that a "good deal"
may be lacking in experience and quality. Don't, however, be timid about asking for a discount. There are slow seasons during which many DJs would rather perform for a cheaper rate than not perform
at all. Q: The party is going great and we're having a wonderful time! How much do you charge for
overtime? A: Most disc jockeys will be happy to keep the party going if they don't have any other
obligations, provided that the rental hall is available for the extended time. Check with your hall in advance. The extended time is usually billed at the regular rate. Q: My party will last for 3hrs, from 7pm - 10pm. When will you arrive and how long will you take to setup? A: As a general rule, a disc jockey should arrive at least one hour before the start of your event. This allows 45min for load in and setup, and
15min to "get settled" and review special requests, dedications and dances. Time required for setup and breakdown is not considered "billable" time. Q: Do you host limbo, contests and games? How much extra does this cost? A: For added fun & excitement, many DJ services host dance contests & limbo contests complete with inflatable guitars, microphones, props & prizes
for the winners. Line dances and the Hokey Pokey may also get the crowd going. Some DJs provide these services as part of a package deal, some charge extra. Q: What type of music do you play? A: Many disc
jockeys play only a limited variety of music, some play a mix of hits from the 50s-90s. Ask for a listing of available music from prospective DJ services. Also, look for a DJ service that is willing to
"work with you" in the selection of music for your event. You and your DJ should discuss the musical taste of you and your guests long before the actual event.. Search our music list Q: What is your policy concerning obscene lyrics and content? A: A professional DJ service will have a "no obscenity" policy regarding music played no matter what type of event. Discuss this with the prospective DJ
service before hand to avoid any confusion.
Q: We're considering using your DJ services. Can we come see you perform somewhere? A: Many times a DJ
service will be able to make arrangements with a current customer to allow you to visit an upcoming event for a brief period of time. Also, a professional DJ service will be happy to provide you with a
list of references you can call. This will give you the opinion of past customers who have actually paid for the DJ's services. Many DJs will have a videotape of their performance for you to review in
your home. Q: How do you dress for an event? A: Dress code is something that will vary according to the event and should be discussed in advance. For Sweet -16s, etc. a suit is acceptable but a tuxedo
is preferable. At a Luau, Hawaiian clothing would be perfectly acceptable to some and not to others. Consider what you would like the DJ to wear, and then discuss it with him or her.
The DJ you choose should be happy to comply.
Q: Do you offer lighting & special FX? Does this cost extra? A: Many DJs offer lighting & special FX to add excitement to your party! Charges vary depending on the amount & type of lighting provided. Inquire
beforehand & also ask to see the different lighting & special FX in action at the showroom. Hopefully, we have been helpful with your decision making.Carefully consider
how important each of the above items are to you, and choose accordingly. Most importantly, meet the prospective DJ & follow your instincts. Remember, the party you save may be your own!
